This design was inspired by the “flow net”, a concept hydraulic engineers use to describe groundwater flow fields. The flow net consists of a series of distorted squares. By extending the idea to principle stresses in thin-walled tubes, it is easy to visualize the stress “stream”. If the tube is a bridge over a creek, stresses flow along the lattice network, while the water, people, light and air flow under, through and around the tube.
